A Yangtze River cruise is the easiest way to see the Three Gorges: you unpack once, and the scenery comes to you. This starter guide covers the three decisions that shape the whole trip.
1. Choose your direction
Most cruises run between Chongqing and Yichang. Downstream (Chongqing → Yichang) takes about 4 days and rides with the current; upstream takes 5 days at a calmer pace. Downstream suits travelers connecting onward to Shanghai; upstream pairs well with a Chengdu or Chongqing city stay.
2. Pick a ship that fits your style
- Century ships — newer builds with modern interiors and larger public decks.
- Victoria ships — classic favorites with strong English-speaking service.

3. Book the right cabin early
Balcony staterooms are the standard on the Yangtze — nearly every cabin has one. What sells out first are the suites on higher decks, especially over Chinese holidays. If your dates are fixed, book 3–6 months ahead.
