Guizhou: The Ethnic Corridor on the Highlands
Welcome to Guizhou. The province sits on the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau. Mountains and hills cover 92.5 percent of it. There is no plain underneath. Rivers cut the mountains into gorges. Bridges join the gorges. Villages sit in the mist. The Miao, Dong, Bouyei, and Shui live in these valleys. Silver, Dong grand song, batik, and the Shui script are still in use. What is Guizhou like? High. Damp. Dense. The roads run on bridges. You drive across in a few minutes. Do not change the route for the height. Festivals outnumber the cities. One is enough. Eat first. Then the valleys. On a short trip, take the villages in the east or the water in the west. Not both. Guizhou is not a place you finish in a glance. Stay. Walk slowly. Listen. See: Huangguoshu Waterfall · Xiaoqikong in Libo · Xijiang · Zhaoxing · Fanjingshan · Zhenyuan. Taste: Sour-fish soup and the dip. Changwang noodles, beef rice noodles, siwawa, sticky rice, a long-table feast. Niubie only if you want the bitter broth.

Guizhou Food
Eat first. The dip is why you order the fish. Rice wine is the cup at the village gate on a festival day. It is not the end of every meal.
Water in the West
Huangguoshu in the morning. Xiaoqikong needs its own day. Wanfenglin is a viewpoint in the southwest. It is not on the way to Xijiang.
Villages in the East
Xijiang after dark. Zhaoxing in the morning. Zhenyuan is the slower day on the river. Festivals follow the moon. One is enough.
Stone, Steps, and the Road
Do not change the route for the height of a bridge. Do not move the next day's village to wait for clouds.
How to Split the Days
The province is high, damp, and dense. A short trip takes one side of it.
