Macau: two worlds on one stone street

A cobbled lane turns into Chinese shop signs; a church throws its shadow over incense at A-Ma. Welcome to Macau. The city is small and the layers are many: Portuguese on the street plates, Cantonese hot in the alleys, and the lights of Cotai coming on across the water. This is not one sight. It is a port on the South China Sea where two ways of living sit on the same ground. What is Macau like? Small. Layered. Salt. All harbour temperament. The peninsula faces the Pearl River mouth; Taipa and Coloane turn sea into road. St. Paul’s is a façade; Senado Square is still for walking; A-Ma Temple waited for the tide before the Portuguese did. The Barrier Gate meets Zhuhai; the water looks toward Hong Kong. Distances are short. Four centuries are not. The culture is what a port keeps. Portuguese cooking entered Cantonese kitchens; a church stands next to a temple; egg tarts move from oven to street. Eat first: a pastel de nata (the pastry crisp, the custard hot), then a pork-chop bun, then sit down to African chicken. The sweet is Portuguese, the seafood is the harbour’s, and the steam from a cha chaan teng is still Cantonese. Then walk the stones, pass the arches, finish the old city, and look at the lights on the other shore. Macau is not an island you pass. It is a city you read in the lanes, where East and West actually stack.
