Tibet: a plateau you enter by slowing down

Prayer flags snap in the wind; snow peaks press the sky down. Welcome to Tibet. Roads run in the clouds, monasteries sit on the mountains, and people walk circles around a temple. This is not a sight you finish. It is a plateau that asks you to slow your step. What is Tibet like? High. Quiet. Bright. All plateau temperament. Lhasa rests in a river valley; beyond it, Namtso and Yamdrok; farther south, Everest lifts the horizon. The air is thin, the light is hard; the river is the Yarlung Tsangpo, the road is a climb. Take the altitude first, then the halls. This highland will not wait. It will not rush you either. The culture is a kora. The Potala is a palace and a monastery; butter lamps at the Jokhang do not go out; Barkhor Street turns Lhasa into a circle. Tea and horses came up from the lowlands; Buddhism folded in from India and the Han world; walls are white, and scripture moves on the wind. Drink first: butter tea (sweet tea if you need a way in), then tsampa, then yak. Then walk with the pilgrims, watch flags break on the passes, and see a lake turn the sky over. Tibet is not scenery you pass. It is a place you enter when you slow down.
