13-Day Silk Road Adventure: Xi'an, Dunhuang & Kashgar

Your journey begins in historic Xi'an, a classic eastern gateway of the ancient Silk Road trading network. On arrival at Xi'an airport, your guide greets you and transfers you by private vehicle to your hotel. Check in and rest after the long-haul flight, or take a short walk nearby to settle into the city before Terracotta Warriors and city-wall sightseeing tomorrow.

This morning, drive outside the city to the Terracotta Warriors, the life-size clay soldiers, chariots, and horses created for China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang. Walk sections of Xi'an's well-preserved Ancient City Wall for views over the old capital, then continue to the Muslim Quarter for local snacks and a look at daily life along the lanes. Return to the hotel for overnight before tomorrow's flight toward Jiayuguan.

Begin at the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, linked to the monk Xuanzang and sutras brought from India along Silk Road routes that later inspired Journey to the West. Continue to the Hanyang Mausoleum, where pottery figures illustrate scenes of social life from about 2,200 years ago. After sightseeing, transfer to the airport for your flight to Jiayuguan. Meet your local guide on arrival and check in for two nights.

Explore Jiayuguan, where the Great Wall and Silk Road meet in northwest Gansu. Visit Jiayuguan Pass, built largely of rammed earth, for views over the Gobi, then the Great Wall Museum for artifacts, models, and construction history spanning more than two millennia. Continue to the First Fire Tower of the Great Wall and the Overhanging Great Wall before returning to your Jiayuguan hotel.

Start with a morning visit to the Wei-Jin Art Gallery, an ancient tomb complex with more than 1,400 tombs and colorful murals from the third century that show diet, customs, music, and daily life. After the visit, continue by road for about five hours to Dunhuang, the next Silk Road stop. Settle into your hotel for three nights before Mogao Grottoes and desert sightseeing.

Explore the UNESCO-listed Mogao Grottoes, also called the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas, for Buddhist paintings and statues spanning about a thousand years. Continue to the Dunhuang Museum for context on the city and the ancient Silk Road, then stroll the Ancient City of Dunhuang Movie Set for a staged look at historic streetscapes. Visit Dunhuang Research Academy to hear mural stories and painting techniques; you may try making a small mural to take home if you wish. Enjoy an organic vegetarian lunch at the academy, then continue to the Singing Sand Dunes on the edge of the Gobi. Optionally ride a camel toward Crescent Moon Spring, a desert oasis ringed by dunes, and consider sand sliding or paragliding before relaxing by the water and returning to the hotel.

Visit the Yulin Caves, often called sister caves to Mogao, a network of 42 Buddhist caves with colored statues and wall paintings. After breakfast, drive about 2.5 hours to Urumqi. Following a short rest at the hotel, visit Heavenly Lake of Tianshan for alpine scenery where lake water mirrors snow-capped peaks; a lake cruise is typically included when conditions allow. In the early evening, walk the International Grand Bazaar for Uyghur performances, street food, and shopping as lights come on, then overnight in Urumqi before the museum and flight to Kashgar.

This morning, visit the Xinjiang Museum to explore cultural exchanges along the Silk Road, including the well-known preserved ancient corpse often linked with Loulan and early Western Regions history. After the museum, transfer to the airport for an about two-hour flight to Kashgar.
