After breakfast, drive to Matang, a Gejia village near Kaili. Gejia people are counted as Miao. In the dye house, wax is drawn on cloth and the cloth goes into indigo. A length of blue cloth often hangs at the door. The women’s dress has a close, martial cut taken from an old story of an archer and the suns. You may draw a small piece if the house is dyeing. A cup of rice wine may be offered at the door, and you can decline. In the afternoon the guide takes you to two more Miao villages in these hills, chosen for that date. The houses are wood, often raised over the slope. If a family is singing, you can listen from the seat they offer.
