Guizhou Karst Landscapes & World-Record Bridges
The train enters Guizhou in tunnels, then on bridges. Towns sit in basins and river valleys. Guiyang is in a basin. Kaili is in a valley of the Miaoling, the Miao mountains. Rongjiang sits on the Duliu River. Taipan sits in a small basin on the lower Bala. Flat ground here is a gap the mountains left. It is not a plain. Mountains and hills cover 92.5 percent of the province. Official descriptions call it the only province in China with no plain beneath it. Officials have counted 1.258 million peaks. You do not need that number. You need this: the next village is usually on the far side of a bridge.
In summer, Guiyang is cooler than Changsha or Chongqing at the same latitude. The southern valleys get hot. Rain is common, and the sky is often gray. Pack a rain shell. The average elevation is about 1,100 meters. Karst cuts the mountains into stone peaks, sends water into caves, and stacks the rice into terraces.
A bridge here is a road. The Huajiang Canyon Bridge opened on 28 September 2025. The deck is 625 meters above the water, the highest clearance of any bridge. The drive across takes a few minutes. The previous record was also on the Beipan River: the Beipanjiang Bridge, 565 meters above the water. Nearly half of the world’s 100 highest bridges are in Guizhou. You will cross some of them. Do not change the route for the height.

Planning Your Guizhou Route: East vs. West
Give Guiyang one night. Eat the rice noodles, then leave. Do not put the east and the west into the same short trip.
Go east for Miao and Dong villages. At Xijiang, wait until dark. The lights come on first. The silver jewelry shows after that. At Zhaoxing, go in the morning. The drum towers come out of the mist before the groups do. Zhenyuan is an old town on a river, farther east, for the day you slow down. If a festival falls on your dates, go to one. Basketball at the village gate, dragon boats rowed standing up, or Eating the New Rice in the village. Those dates follow the lunar calendar. In 2026 the finals fell in the National Day week. In 2025 the basketball finals ended on 17 October. In finals week, choose Taipan or Rongjiang. You cannot do both.
Go west or south for water and stone. Huangguoshu Waterfall is the closest to Guiyang. Go in the morning. The afternoon is crowded. Xiaoqikong, in Libo, needs its own day. The water runs between karst peaks. Wanfenglin is a viewpoint over a forest of peaks, in the southwest. It is not on the way to Xijiang.

Fanjingshan is in the northeast: stone steps and a cable car. Clouds come, or they do not. Do not move tomorrow's village to try again.

The FAST radio telescope, known as the China Sky Eye (中国天眼), sits in a karst bowl at Pingtang. Book ahead. You stand at the rim and look down into the dish. You do not walk in. Allow half a day. It is not a stop on the way.

Sour soup, long tables
Order sour-fish soup first. The broth is sour. The fish is poached. The dip is chili and garlic. The dip is why you order the fish.

At night, eat changwang noodles, made with pork intestine and blood. Or Huaxi beef rice noodles. Or siwawa (丝娃娃), thin rice sheets wrapped around shredded vegetables. Or luoguo (烙锅), a griddle at the table, where you cook tofu, potato, and meat yourself. Sticky rice and grilled tofu are more common in the villages.
At the Rongjiang pitch, stalls sell niubie (牛瘪). The broth is liquid from a cow’s stomach, with bile, simmered with beef and herbs. It is bitter. Walk past if you do not want it.
A long-table feast can run from the village gate to the drum tower. It is usually a separate bill. Ask the price before you sit.
