Chongqing: China’s 8D Mountain City
Welcome to Chongqing — a cyberpunk mountain city where two rivers meet, trains run through apartment buildings, and night views look like a movie set. It is Western China’s hub, the gateway to the Yangtze, and one of the most talked-about cities in China right now. What is Chongqing like? Steep. Layered. Loud with dockside life. The city climbs the cliffs at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing: streets stack over streets, the same building has more than one “ground floor,” and a light rail slips through Liziba as if the mountain itself were a station. This is dock culture in 8D — porters once hauled cargo up these slopes; today you ride a cableway over the river, then walk down to hotpot. It was China’s wartime capital, a river port that learned to live on stairs. That grit is still here: Hongya Cave glowing after dark, Shancheng Lane unfolding around each corner, Ciqikou along the water, Wulong’s stone bridges and Dazu’s cliff carvings a day beyond the skyline. Eat first — legendary Chongqing hotpot (ask for a split pot if you need it milder), then a bowl of spicy xiaomian. Then go up, through, and over. Chongqing is not a city you look at. Hongyadong Folk Custom Area
An 11-story stilt-house complex rising 79 metres at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers. By night the layered houses glow like the bathhouse in Spirited Away, overlooking the two rivers — Chongqing's most iconic landmark.
Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street
China's only monument to victory in the War of Resistance, ringed by one of Chongqing's busiest shopping and street-food districts. Nearby Bayi Food Street gathers noodles, hotpot and spicy-sour noodles — modern commerce meeting wartime history.
Ciqikou Ancient Town
Founded in 998 AD and named for its porcelain trade, "Little Chongqing" winds through bluestone lanes past Ming–Qing Bayu houses and temples. Sample sesame twists, watch Sichuan-opera face-changing, and soak up old Chongqing's street life.
Yangtze River Cableway
The "first aerial corridor over the Yangtze" — retro cabins glide 1,166 metres across the river with panoramic views of the Yuzhong Peninsula and the meeting of the two rivers. Especially beautiful at dusk.
Liziba Light Rail Through Building
Light Rail Line 2 runs straight through the 6th–8th floors of a residential tower — "the train runs through the building, travelers wander in a painting." The viewing platform below Exit A captures the spectacle against green hills and the Jialing River.
Dazu Rock Carvings
The peak of late Chinese grotto art, begun in 650 AD and carved across dynasties. Baoding Mountain's Thousand-Hand Guanyin, Six Realms of Reincarnation and Three Saints of Avatamsaka are exquisite and vividly lifelike.
Wulong Three Natural Bridges
Three towering natural stone arches span a karst valley around two giant sinkholes — a filming location for Transformers: Age of Extinction. Grand, wild, and serene, with deep valleys and lush cliffs.

When the lights come on, the mountain city turns magical — glowing rivers, sizzling night markets and breezy riverside walks.
Two-Rivers Night View
From dusk (lights on 19:00–23:00) the Hongyadong stilt houses glow in tiers of warm gold down the cliff. Walk onto Qiansimen Bridge for a head-on view, or cross to the Jiangbeizui theatre promenade for the best unobstructed — and free — panorama of the glittering skyline.
Late-Night Eats & Night Markets
Chongqing's nightlife soul is its markets — stalls of fire-grilled beef, hand-made ice jelly, old-brine skewers and mountain-city tangyuan stretch down the street in a river of lights. Skip the schedule and graze slowly, the way locals do.
Nanbin Road Riverside Walk
Strung along the south bank, "Chongqing's Bund" is the classic night stroll. Clock Tower Plaza is the golden viewpoint — the whole Yuzhong skyline, Raffles' sails, the Jiefangbei towers and the two-rivers confluence laid out before you, the Yangtze rushing past below, far from the crowds.

Chongqing Grand Theatre
A sail-shaped landmark on the Jialing River and the face of the city's performing arts. The main hall hosts symphonies, original Broadway musicals (Cats, Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land, Du Fu), world-class ballet and grand opera; the Chongqing Symphony stages its original "City of Heroes," weaving Hongyan history into the score.
Riverside Open-Air Concerts
In festival seasons and on summer nights the city moves symphony, folk, jazz and pop onto the banks of the Yangtze and Jialing — mountains for a backdrop, the river breeze a natural sound stage, the far-shore lights the set. Most sessions are free; stumble on an impromptu set after dinner or come for a themed night.
Sichuan Opera Art Center
The home of Sichuan opera, staging classics like Sister Jiang and Legend of the White Snake. See face-changing, water sleeves and fire-spitting performed up close — living intangible-heritage craft, with national-level repertoire on rotation.
