The Yangtze: the river that built China

Welcome to the Yangtze — the east–west spine of Chinese civilization: poetry on the water, cities on the banks, grain, ships, and power moving on one current. It rises on the Tibetan Plateau and runs more than 6,000 kilometers. The Yellow River is origin; the Yangtze is how the country grew. To read China, you have to read this river. What are the gorges like? Grand. Quiet. Fierce. All mountain pressing on water. Where the river cuts the Wu range, it becomes Qutang, Wu, and Xiling: Kuimen as a slit of sky, Goddess Peak in the cloud, and, where Xiling opens, the Three Gorges Dam. The cliffs are still there. The dam gathers flood control, shipping, and hydropower into one project — the largest of its kind on earth — and holds a river that used to rewrite history overnight. To see how the walls face each other, you have to be on the water. The culture is older than the view. White Emperor City keeps a Three Kingdoms farewell; Qu Yuan’s verse came out of these gorges; tracker songs still cling to the rock. Along the banks: docks, terraces, rebuilt towns, and a table that changes with the current — Chongqing hotpot at one end, river fish at the other, and the taste of gorge households in between. A cruise is not an add-on. It is the best way to see the Three Gorges. Between Chongqing and Yichang you pack once, pass the gorges by day, sleep on the river at night, and watch Qutang, Wu, Xiling, and the dam from a balcony cabin. You board in one city and leave the ship in the other. The gorges are not scenery you drive past. They are a river you step onto.
