If pandas are why you booked China, go to Chengdu. If this is a first trip already built around Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai, Guangzhou, or a Yangtze cruise, you do not have to add a flight just to see one.
Those other cities keep pandas too. Chengdu wins on numbers. Chongqing wins on a Yangtze stop. Beijing wins on a new house next to the classic city days. Xi’an has the only brown panda in captivity. Shanghai has a mother and cubs. Guangzhou is the family-park version.
Chengdu: the full panda day
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is one of the largest captive collections in the world: more than 200 animals, with over a hundred usually on view. You see adults, sub-adults, cubs, and twins in one morning, not a single enclosure.
Go here when pandas are a main reason for the trip and you can spare a day or two in Sichuan. Skip Chengdu if your nights are already locked to Beijing–Xi’an–Shanghai and you do not want another flight. Pandas are most active in the morning; plan the base before lunch.
Chongqing: the panda morning on a Yangtze trip
Chongqing Zoo holds about 23 to 24 giant pandas, among the largest collections in any Chinese city zoo. Most of them were born here, including local family lines such as Yuke, Yu’ai, and the Sixi Wanzi group.
A Three Gorges cruise usually starts or ends in Chongqing. You can take the city, the river views, and hotpot, then spend a morning with pandas, and never open a Chengdu ticket. Use Chongqing when the ship is already on the itinerary. It is not a substitute for Chengdu if the goal is to see pandas of every age in one place.

Beijing: a new panda house on the classic loop
Beijing Zoo opened a new giant panda house in July 2026. The zoo has ten pandas. The new halls feature five of them, including Menglan, Fuxing, Baitian, Jinian, and Fujiang.
You are probably already booking the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, and a hutong morning. A panda visit fits the same city stay. Come for that convenience, not for volume. Do not fly to Beijing only for pandas.
Xi’an: the brown panda
Qinling Four Treasures Science Park in Xi’an keeps Qizai, the only brown giant panda in captivity. He is cinnamon and cream, not the black-and-white coat people expect.
If the Terracotta Army is already on the trip, Qizai is the rare extra, not a second Chengdu. The point is one animal you will not see anywhere else.
Shanghai: a panda family in a city you are visiting anyway
Shanghai Wild Animal Park has Qianjin, her male–female twin cubs Qianran and Qianyi, and Qianzhen, who arrived in 2026. If the Bund, Lujiazui, and Yu Garden are already booked, this is a panda morning without a long transfer. It suits families who want cubs. It does not replace Chengdu.

Guangzhou: pandas with a theme park, if you are already south
Chimelong Safari Park has the only surviving giant panda triplets, Mengmeng, Shuaishuai, and Kuku, plus their offspring Meizhu. It fits a family stay that already includes the park hotels.
The central Panda Village has been closed since May 2026. Guests can still see pandas at the Meizhu house, the panda restaurant, or from the cable car. Book to the areas that are open this season.
How to choose
Pandas are the reason you came: Chengdu. You are already on Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai, or Guangzhou: see them in that city. You already booked a Yangtze cruise: Chongqing. Half a day is enough.
Chengdu is the trip you build around pandas. The other five cities are where pandas fit a trip you already built. If the cruise is set, Chongqing is the stop. You do not have to go looking farther.
