Yangtze Cruise Day 1: How to Reach Your Ship in Chongqing or Yichang

The hard part of a Yangtze cruise is not the gorges. It is night one: finding the right pier when Google Maps is blank, the ship may have moved because of the water level, and your suitcase still has to get down a hillside.

This guide is only about boarding day. Use it if you are sailing downstream (Chongqing → Yichang) or upstream (Yichang → Chongqing). If you still need to pick a ship, dates, or cabin, start with How to Plan Your First Yangtze River Cruise and the Yangtze cruise schedule and ships.

First, which way are you sailing?

Downstream (Chongqing to Yichang), usually 4 days / 3 nights. You board in Chongqing city, most often at Chaotianmen Port (朝天门码头). This is the easier first night for most visitors: the dock is in town, and you can reach it by metro or taxi.

Upstream (Yichang to Chongqing), usually 5 days / 4 nights. Do not go looking for a ship in downtown Yichang. Most ships wait upstream at Maoping Port in Zigui (秭归茅坪港). You check in at a city meeting point, then take the cruise company’s shuttle (about 1 to 1.5 hours).

If you can still choose a direction, compare downstream vs upstream, ship style, and how the cruise sits in a wider China route. Downstream is simpler on day 1. Upstream gives you an extra night on board. Either way, sleep in the boarding city the night before. Same-day afternoon arrivals work only when nothing goes wrong.

Check your cruise line’s final boarding notice 1 to 3 days before departure (SMS, WeChat, email, or your agent). Water levels, lock schedules, and pier assignments change.

In Chongqing, ships can leave Chaotianmen and send coaches to Fengdu (丰都) or Wanzhou (万州) instead. That transfer is often around 2 hours, not a short hop across town. In Yichang, the meeting point or last shuttle can also shift, especially in the off-season.

Before you leave the hotel

Documents. Foreign guests board with a passport, not a domestic ID. Bring the original plus your cruise voucher (PDF on your phone and a paper copy if you can). Confirm whether you need an L visa, or whether you qualify for visa-free entry. Use the visa checker if you are unsure.

Apps. Install these before you fly, while SMS verification still works:

Didi for cars — there is no Uber here
Amap (Gaode / 高德地图) for walking and transit. iPhone Apple Maps also works. Google Maps is often blocked or inaccurate on the mainland.

Bring ¥200–300 cash ($28–42) for porters, small shops, and backup. Many dock workers do not take foreign cards.

If your notice names a different pier or hotel pickup, use that Chinese address instead.

Downstream: Chongqing to Yichang

Where you board, and when

Usual dock: Chaotianmen Port (朝天门码头), Yuzhong District, at the meeting of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers. For what else to do in the mountain city before you sail, see the Chongqing destination guide.

Chaotianmen is not one gangway. Cruise ships use numbered piers such as 6, 8, 11, 15, and 17. Your notice should say which number. Taxis often stop at a Raffles City Chongqing drop-off, not on the pontoon. From there you still walk — sometimes a few minutes, sometimes 10 to 20 — through the mall and down toward the river.

Typical boarding window: 16:00–20:00. Many ships sail around 21:00. Exact times vary by ship. Check the date on your vessel on the Yangtze cruise schedule.

If you want dinner on board (often 18:00–20:00 on embarkation night), aim to be at check-in before 18:00. Arrive in Chongqing before 15:00 so traffic, a wrong metro exit, or a last-minute pier change does not eat the evening.

Water-level alert: In dry or high-water periods, the ship may not dock at Chaotianmen at all. The company then runs coaches from downtown Chongqing to Fengdu or Wanzhou. Do not go to Chaotianmen until the day’s notice says so.

Check-in in plain English

2.Walk the pontoon / floating bridge to the ship.

3.Show your passport and voucher.

4.Pass security.

5.Collect your cabin key. Bags may go to the lobby or cabin separately — keep passport, medicine, and a change of clothes with you.

Getting to Chaotianmen from Chongqing’s hubs

Chongqing is a mountain city. Metro is cheap; dragging a hard-shell suitcase through Raffles City and down river stairs is not. Light bag, you know the city: metro is fine. Suitcases, kids, or limited mobility: take a taxi or a pre-booked car.

The Chaotianmen metro station sits inside Raffles City. Exits are not interchangeable:

Exit 1 is the usual one quoted for piers 11, 15, and 17 — often a longer walk (about 12–20 minutes).
Exits 2 or 4 are often better for piers 6 and 8 (a few minutes).

Follow signs for the river / cruise docks / LG levels, and hunt for elevators. Do not assume there is a ramp the whole way.

Times below are normal traffic. Rain and rush hour add a lot in Chongqing. Fares are metro or taxi, approximate.

Chongqing North Railway Station (重庆北站)

Common for high-speed trains from Chengdu, Wuhan, Shanghai, and Beijing.

This station has two plazas. North Square (北广场) and South Square (南广场) are a 10–20 minute underground walk apart, or one stop on Metro Line 10. Taxis cannot cut across; they drive a long loop. Check your arrival signs before you pick a metro entrance or taxi rank.

Metro: Line 10 to Qixinggang (七星岗), transfer to Line 1, get off at Chaotianmen (朝天门). About 45 minutes, about ¥5 ($0.70).
Taxi / Didi: 30–40 minutes, about ¥30–45 ($4–6).

Chongqing West Railway Station (重庆西站)

Common for high-speed trains from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Kunming, Guiyang, and Xi’an.

Metro: Line 5 to Shapingba (沙坪坝), transfer to Line 1 to Chaotianmen. About 60 minutes, about ¥6–7 ($1).
Taxi / Didi: 40–50 minutes, about ¥50–70 ($7–10).

Chongqing East Railway Station (重庆东站)

Newer hub for lines toward Changsha, Zhangjiajie, Xiamen, and Zhengzhou.

Metro: Take the Line 6 East Station segment from Chongqing East. Change at Liujiaping (刘家坪) onto the main Line 6 (same-platform transfer). Ride to Xiaoshizi (小什字) and walk, or transfer there to Line 1 for Chaotianmen Station. About 50–60 minutes, about ¥6–8 ($1). There is no separate “express connector” line to learn — it is Line 6.
Taxi / Didi: 35–45 minutes, about ¥45–65 ($6–9).

Shapingba Railway Station (沙坪坝站)

Mostly Chengdu East intercity trains.

Metro: Line 1 straight to Chaotianmen. About 35 minutes, about ¥4 ($0.55).
Taxi / Didi: 30–40 minutes, about ¥35–50 ($5–7).

Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG, 重庆江北国际机场)

Note the Chinese name: Jiangbei, not a look-alike spelling. Terminals T2 and T3 both connect to Metro Line 10.

Metro: Line 10 from T2 or T3 to Qixinggang, transfer to Line 1 to Chaotianmen. About 65 minutes, about ¥7 ($1).
Taxi / Didi: 45–60 minutes in decent traffic, about ¥65–90 ($9–13). Budget more after 17:00 and in rain.

Porters at the Chongqing docks (“Bangbang” men)

At Chaotianmen you will meet bangbang porters (棒棒军) with bamboo poles, offering to carry bags down the stairs. They are useful if you have heavy luggage and no elevator path.

Agree the price before they touch the suitcase. A common range is ¥15–30 per bag ($2–4). Pay in cash. If you do not want help, a firm “不用，谢谢” (bù yòng, xiè xie) is enough. Do not hand over passports or the bag that has them.

Upstream: Yichang to Chongqing

The ship is not in the city

Most Yangtze ships do not board on the Yichang riverfront. In 2026 the default for almost every mainstream ship is Maoping Port (茅坪港) in Zigui County, about 1 to 1.5 hours west of town, near the Three Gorges Dam area.

A few ships are exceptions. Yangzi Explorer has used Sandouping on some itineraries, and Yangtze 1 has used Yichang No. 9 Wharf. Your booking confirmation wins. Do not taxi to “the dam visitor center” and hope to see your hull.

Yichang has no metro. Plan on the cruise shuttle, a taxi/Didi, or a private transfer.

Where the shuttle actually picks you up

Cruise companies run complimentary coaches, usually on a rolling basis. A common window is 17:30–20:00 (some lines start as early as 16:00 in high season). Last buses are easy to miss if you are still at the airport.

Main gathering points:

Yichang Sanxia Tourist Center (宜昌三峡游客中心)
Also called Three Gorges Tourist Center / Three Gorges Center Cruise Terminal. It sits near the old Nine Docks area, across from Wanda Plaza, on Yanjiang Avenue, Wujiagang District.
Search it in Amap as 宜昌三峡游客中心 — not in Google Maps.
Yichang East Railway Station (宜昌东站)
Pickup is outside the station, signed for luxury cruise / 游轮接送 coaches. Follow those signs rather than a memorized floor number; layouts get tweaked.

Off-season (often mid-to-late November through March): some lines drop the East Station pickup and run only from the Sanxia Tourist Center. If you arrive by train in winter, do not assume a coach is waiting at the exit.

How to reach the meeting point

From Yichang East Railway Station

If your notice includes an East Station shuttle, go there first. If it does not, take a taxi to the Sanxia Tourist Center (about 20–30 minutes, traffic depending).

From Yichang Sanxia Airport (YIH, 宜昌三峡机场)

There is no direct cruise dock at the airport.

Airport bus toward the city, get off at Wanda Plaza, then walk across to the tourist center. Fare is often around ¥20–25 ($3).
Taxi / Didi to the tourist center: about 40–50 minutes, roughly 32 km.

Be at the meeting point with time to spare. Arrive in Yichang before 15:00. Flights that land after 16:00 are a poor fit unless you have already booked a private car all the way to Maoping.

Boarding the shuttle, then the ship

1.At the tourist center (or the station desk your line names), show passport + cruise voucher.

2.Collect the coach ticket. Some desks offer luggage handling onto the ship for a fee (around ¥25 per case / about $3.50 on some lines — optional, cash).

3.Ride to Maoping. Keep your passport on you; bags usually go in the coach hold.

4.At the port: security, passport check, cabin keys. Same idea as Chongqing, just after a longer bus ride.

If you miss the last shuttle

Do not improvise a “short taxi to the dam.” Maoping is a dedicated port in Zigui, and English-speaking drivers are scarce at 20:30.

Call your cruise line or agent first. If you booked through East Marvel, contact us and we can usually arrange a car. Options are usually: a pre-booked private transfer to Maoping, or waiting for whatever late arrangement they can still make. If you already know you cannot hit the 17:30–20:00 window, book the car to Maoping when you book the cruise, not at the airport curb.

A simple Day 1 timeline

Around 21:00	Many Chongqing departures. Stay on the notice, not on this table.

Practical extras that save the evening

Stay downtown the night before. In Chongqing, hotels near Chaotianmen / Jiefangbei / Raffles City cut the last transfer. A spare city day also fits a Chongqing classic tour if you want Hongyadong and hotpot before boarding. In Yichang, hotels near Wanda Plaza / the tourist center beat hotels “near the airport.”
Mobility. Chongqing docks mean slopes and stairs. Ask the cruise line for assistance or a car drop as close as the pier allows. Metro with a walker is a bad plan.
Same-day flight. Possible only with a morning arrival and no luggage delay. One thunderstorm in Chongqing or a late YIH inbound and you are buying a private car or missing the ship.

FAQ

Can I fly in the same afternoon?
Only if you accept the risk. For Chongqing, a landing at CKG after about 14:00 already squeezes boarding, especially if the ship has moved to Fengdu or Wanzhou. For Yichang, a landing after 16:00 often misses the shuttle.

Is metro realistic with two big suitcases?
In Chongqing, usually no. Pay for the taxi. In Yichang there is no metro anyway.

Do I need cash?
Yes, a little. Porters, some shuttle luggage fees, and small stalls are still cash or Chinese QR codes. See how to pay in China.

Which direction is easier for first-time visitors?
